Mission: New ASPIRA RAM Library

We are ASPIRA RAUL ARNALDO MARTINEZ Middle School and our students have personally taken on the challenge to redo our school library. Our requests are simple but our mission is vital for the students we serve. Our space is somewhat small but our goal is to create a vibrant room that will allow our student's imaginations to run wild!

The objective: To have a space where students can feel relaxed as they read, collaborate on ideas, and come together to work on school activities and homework.

We want to design the space that has a chalkwall, wall map, science wall, bookshelves and most importantly BOOKS!!

  • Books - 6th through 8th grade
  • Rectangle Table with 4 chairs - $100
  • Art Supplies - $75
  • 2 cans of Chalkboard paint - $9.67 each
  • 1 8-Piece Roller Tray Set - $9.97
  • 1 World Word Art Map decal - $55
  • 2 Circo Bean Bags for sitting - Digital Camouflage - $26.99
  • 2 Shelving Unit with 12 Compartments - $134 x 2

Students from Barry University will be volunteering to help get the new library ready to go!

Pictures will be posted after our renovation is complete!

By the end of September, we hope to change all that for the kids! All donations will be deeply appreciated! We are excited for the renovation of the space!

Aspirantes Participate in 2014 African American Read-In Day

AfricanAmericanReadInASPIRA Eugenio Maria de Hostos Youth Leadership and ASPIRA Raul Arnaldo Martinez Youth Leadership Charter School students participated in the National African American Read-In at Miami Dade College's North Campus on Monday, February 3, 2014.

As part of the 25th National African American Read-In initiative to promote literacy, Miami Dade College's (MDC) North Campus and the Center for Literature and Theatre @MDC hosted hundreds of local college, middle and high school students, who took part in a read-in at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3. The read-in was held in Lehman Theatre at the Pawley Creative Arts Center and helped kick off the campus' Black History Month celebration. The event was streamed live via at to encourage participation from the community.

After the read-in, ASPIRA South students were treated to lunch by Miami Dade College North Campus adjacent the beautiful Science Complex. Students broke off into small groups led by teams of MDC professionals and students engaged in small learning communities to discuss topics presented in this year's featured book.

This year's featured book was Eight Habits of the Heart: Embracing the Values that Build Strong Communities by Clifton Taulbert. Eight Habits of the Heart is a memoir that recounts the eight lessons and "front porch wisdom" the author learned while growing up in the Mississippi Delta. Sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English and endorsed by the International Reading Association, the annual Read-In was held simultaneously with more than one million readers from throughout the U.S., West Indies, and Africa to pay homage to African-American writers and their contributions to reading, literature and literacy.

"Reading is a cornerstone of learning, and North Campus is proud to present its African American Read-In as a permanent and active link in a national effort that enriches students," said Malou C. Harrison, president at the North Campus.

Additionally, North Campus students, administrators and faculty will conduct read-ins at elementaryReadIn2014, middle and high schools throughout February to discuss bullying, personal, civic and social responsibility and literacy to further the social and moral development of the most important human resources — children.

Principals Kenneth Feria and Jorge Trujillo of ASPIRA RAM and ASPIRA de Hostos, respectively, mentioned, "We value and support our collaboration with Miami Dade College North. This event opened the eyes of so many of our young people, who learned that reading and improving one's literacy often opens the door to understanding and success."

ASPIRA RAM Achievements in Academics and Sports!

We are pleased to announce that, once again, our school has made headlines both in academics and sports. In the academics area we are celebrating the work of , one of our students who was among the 46 students statewide that obtained a "perfect score" of 6 FCAT 8th Grade Writing. Giana is an excellent student who also plans to become a writer. We know that her skills and talents will make her a great writer with and wonderful future and we are looking forward to it. Once again, we would like to congratulate her as well as the mentors, English teacher Ms. Saint Jean and Writing coach Ms. De Jesús who have guided her in this journey.

On the sports side we celebrate the achievement of our Soccer Team which under the leadership of Mr. Núñez became Champions in their division after playing an extremely close game last Friday June 1, 2012. We are proudly showing off our first Soccer trophy in our school office for all to admire. Once again, go ASPIRA RAM!!
