ASPIRA of Florida Board Appoints Interim CEO

AymetAt their annual meeting on June 19, 2010, the ASPIRA of Florida, Inc., Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint Aymet Chaples as Interim President/CEO.  The decision came on the heels of the passing away of CEO Raul A. Martinez, who had led the organization for 25 years, and was based on the desire to maintain a smooth continuity of operations.
Ms. Chaples has a BA from St. Thomas University and a Master's Degree from Carlos Albizu University (both in Psychology).  Aymet, as she is affectionately known throughout the agency, began her career at ASPIRA in 1989, developing community resources and providing educational support services to youth and families in Hialeah, as a Leadership Development Counselor.   In 1993, she was promoted to Director of Student Services for ASPIRA's first charter school and rose to the position of Accolade South Middle School Director in 1996.

In 1999, Raul's confidence in Aymet's leadership abilities, led him to appoint Aymet as Vice President of Operations and later Chief Operations Officer, placing her at the helm of guiding agency expansion and development.  It is this same confidence that the Board has exhibited in appointing Aymet to lead the agency into the future.

The Staff and Board members wish Aymet well and look forward to a fruitful partnership.

ASPIRA of Florida Family Mourns Loss of Beloved CEO

Raul A. Martinez, President and CEO of ASPIRA of Florida, Inc., passed away Sunday night, May 30th, 11:25 pm, at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. His family and close friends were at his bedside as Raul ended a yearlong struggle with cancer.

Raul_with_ASPIRANTESRaul began his career at ASPIRA as a gang intervention counselor in 1986 and gradually developed into the prominent CEO who led our expansion from a small office in the Wynwood area of Miami, to a sophisticated operation that includes leadership development offices in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach County, three middle Charter Schools and an Adult Night School in Miami-Dade County, and corporate offices in the Miami Design District. He recently implemented a plan to expand into Central Florida.

The Staff and Board members are deeply saddened with his passing and will miss his leadership, charisma, and subtle sense of humor that permeated throughout the organization as he touched those who worked with him and the children he so deeply loved and served. Plans are to institute a scholarship fund in his memory.

We hold him and his family in our prayers. God bless our "hermanito" and number one ASPIRANTE.

Haitian Emergency Leadership Program for Youth

ASPIRA of Florida, Inc, the largest Hispanic youth organization in the country, announces the opening of the Haiti Emergency Leadership Program (H.E.L.P.) Center for Youth. The Center will open on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, from 4-7 p.m. at the ASPIRA Youth Leadership Charter School located at 13300 Memorial Parkway, North Miami, FL 33161, Telephone number 305-893-8050.

helpIn response to the Haiti Earthquake, Raul A. Martinez, the President & CEO of ASPIRA of Florida, Inc., convened his Executive Support Team and, in concert with pertinent agency staff of Haitian descent, developed a plan and identified the role that ASPIRA would perform in the immediate future. The H.E.L.P. Center for Youth is designed to provide:

  • Bereavement and trauma counseling for youth
  • Information and referral for necessary wraparound services
  • A drop off point for needed supplies
  • Dropout and substance abuse prevention activities
  • Family intervention services

For the drop off, staff decided to concentrate on supplies that will directly impact children. We've identified items such as children's medicine (children's Motrin, children's Tylenol, etc,) child Band-Aids and bandages, PediaLyte, Baby Formula, Diapers, and wipes. Supplies can be dropped off at the center beginning on Wednesday. The H.E.L.P. Center will operate weekly; we are currently evaluating the need to open daily.

Other response initiatives include, providing one of our Haitian staff members as an Executive on Loan to join State Rep. Ronald Brise and a volunteer group traveling to Haiti to assess, assist and report, plus a long term goal of establishing a "sister middle school" in the region to support and interact with.
